- Longtime assistant/protege under Joe Mullaney
- Also served as PC's Athletic Director from 1971 to 1982
- Led Friars to their 1st-ever Final Four in 1973
- Coached 6 All-Americans, tied for PC's most with Joe Mullaney
- Left coaching to create the Big East Conference in 1979
- Was selected to coach 1980 Olympic team, but with US boycott of the games in USSR he never got the chance
- Credited with creating the "Dream Team" from the 1992 Olympics
- Inducted to PC Hall of Fame in 1984
- Inducted to Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006
